Job Description:

Budget Title: Associate Director of Computing Services (SL-6)

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

Binghamton University is seeking a collaborative, forward-thinking and service-oriented leader to oversee network and telecommunications, data center services and physical security within Information Technology Services (ITS). Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Information Technology and CIO, the Director of Operations and infrastructure participates in the development of strategic IT direction and assists with investment in and transformation of core IT technologies in support of institutional goals and the newly developed technology strategic plan for the University. This director is responsible for ensuring robust and reliable services for the University community, as well as embracing innovative and emerging technologies to forward research and pursue greater institutional efficiency. As a leader within ITS, this director holds fiscal responsibility and accountability for Operations and Infrastructure and a staff of over 20 full-time employees.

In addition:

  • Holds overall responsibility for all wired and wireless network operations, including the integration of network applications such as voice-over data, video surveillance and access control

  • Develops and implements maintenance and upgrades management plans

  • Ensures that network and telecommunication infrastructure, processes, and procedures are clearly documented and maintained

  • Oversees the development of business standards, technology standards, configurations, change management processes and best practices associated with assigned responsibilities

  • Manages contracts and vendors, including relationship management

  • Provides leadership to renew the physical infrastructure of University data centers and readies them to support expanding research computing capabilities, hybrid cloud computing and disaster recovery

  • Oversees the operations of access control, digital surveillance and other physical security programs, including appropriate records management

  • Provides direction and oversight for emerging physical security concerns, including emerging physical security technologies

  • Oversees the operations of University data center(s) including best practices, standards, operating agreements and service level agreements

  • Manages and enforces the access policies for the data center(s) to ensure appropriate security procedures and regulatory compliance is being maintained

  • Ensures that all chargebacks and revenue sources are self-sustaining and governed, responding to concerns in a timely manner

  • Consults with University representatives, and others as appropriate, to determine the requirements (e.g. safety) of users as related to Network, Operations, Physical Security and Telecommunication services, and advise community representatives on the direction and emphasis of these services

  • Participates in the preparation, maintenance, and periodic testing of the business continuity and disaster recovery plans, to ensure the continuity of computing and communication services in the case of an event that renders IT services inoperative

  • Performs long-term planning activities related to capital purchases, maintenance agreements, sourcing and technology development

  • Participates in IT governance activities

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems management, systems engineering or related fields is required; Master's Degree preferred

  • Minimum 5 years of experience with state-of-the-art networking technologies and architecture

  • Work experience in a higher education or a research environment

  • Demonstrated experience with contract and vendor management
